Football Battle: Fluminense and Corinthians Seeking a Place in the Libertadores Semifinals

This week promises intense emotions for Brazilian fans! Fluminense and Corinthians are ready to decide who advances to the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores de América. And their opponent? None other than the Argentine brothers, who are already accustomed to facing the strength of Brazilian football.

Argentina: A Level Beyond

In recent years, the record of matches between Brazilian and Argentine teams in the Libertadores has been, at the very least, impressive. From 19 knockout confrontations since 2021, 16 ended with wins for Brazilian teams. This gives us a 84,2% success rate! Of course, that’s not something our neighbors should find easy to digest.

With this picture in mind, we can highlight that two of the seven titles won by Brazilian teams in this new era of the Libertadores were against Argentine teams. Remember Flamengo winning in 2019 against River Plate? And Fluminense, who beat Boca Juniors in 2023? This dominance is real!

Current Performance

Since 2021, only three Argentine teams have managed to eliminate Brazilian representatives in the tournament: Estudiantes (Fortaleza in the round of 16 of 2022), Boca Juniors (Palmeiras in the semi of 2023), and Vélez Sarsfield (also Fortaleza in the round of 16 of 2025).

Now, in the first leg of the Libertadores quarterfinals 2026, the Brazilian teams are back with everything! Fluminense, for example, beat Platense by 2 to 0 last week, and they can even lose by a one-goal margin in today’s match, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, and still advance.

Corinthians, who has already faced Argentina and came back with a draw, only needs a simple home victory against Estudiantes to secure their place among the four best teams in South America.

We’re witnessing a real contest between Brazil and Argentina for the title of biggest Libertadores champion. Both countries have 25 trophies, sharing the record. But Brazil stands out thanks to its winning streak this decade.

Who will succeed Flamengo, the most recent champion of the competition? The answer will be revealed on 28 November, in the grand final scheduled for Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay.
