Gaviões da Fiel Protest Against Corinthians After Elimination in the Libertadores

This Thursday, the Gaviões da Fiel, the main organized supporters’ group of Corinthians, didn’t hold back on their words and let it all out after the team’s exit in the Libertadores quarterfinals. The loss to Estudiantes, with a score of 1 to 0, left the squad on edge, and the supporters demanded effort from the players, especially the stars Memphis Depay and Garro.

The Fans’ Uprising

The supporters were firm in saying that the penalty missed by Memphis on the final play of the match is not an excuse for the elimination. In their view, the problem goes far beyond a single mistake. To the fans, Corinthians’ lack of organization is noticeable both on the pitch and off it.

“The elimination can’t be blamed on an isolated moment. The penalty was a reflection of a series of problems that have been weakening Corinthians for months: lack of planning, absence of leadership in football, and unfortunate decisions,” the Gaviões declared.

And the criticism was direct: “Memphis, your penalty appeal was irresponsible, and you were one of the main factors behind the elimination. Now show why Corinthians invested in you. If not, you’d better ask to leave!”

Garro also received his share of the backlash: “Until when will you lose yourself in complaining about the refereeing? Corinthians needs you as a leader!”

But the fury of the fans didn’t stop with those players. The outcry also reached the rest of the squad, which was criticized for the “laziness” shown in recent matches. Even while facing salary delays, the supporters are tired of excuses. “We’re missing delivery, commitment, and attitude. Wearing this shirt is a responsibility!” they said.

The Board’s Response

In response to all this pressure, Marcelo Paz, Corinthians’ football executive, organized a press conference. He defended head coach Fernando Diniz and backed Depay. However, concern about results is real, especially after five straight losses in the Brasileirão, which put the team under the threat of relegation.

The club’s management also escaped the fans’ anger. “The demand extends to the front office. There have been more than 100 days without being able to act in the market due to restrictions. It’s unacceptable!” they emphasized, referring to a ban on transfers that directly affects signings.
