Criticisms of the Maracanã Pitch: Players’ Opinions and Match Results

Complaints about the Maracanã pitch didn’t come only from Flamengo players in yesterday’s Libertadores match. The Independiente del Valle athletes, who faced the red-and-black side, also weren’t happy at all with the conditions of the field!

Sornoza’s Take

The midfielder Sornoza, a former Fluminense player, didn’t hold back and criticized the state of the stadium surface. He pointed out that he played at the Maracanã between 2017 and 2018 and, according to him, the pitch was much better back then. Just look at what he said:

“The field was better when I was playing here. Now I think it’s bad. I played and it’s bad, but it’s not up to me—they have to fix the pitch. But we played a great game!”

In addition to talking about the pitch, Sornoza also revealed a bit of his nostalgia. He misses the Fluminense supporters and living in Rio de Janeiro. For him, life goes on, but there’s always a special place in his heart:

“I also miss Rio, I miss the Fluminense fans, but life goes on.”

The Match and the Semifinals

Yesterday’s match ended in a draw of 1 to 1 between Flamengo and Independiente del Valle. However, since the Red-and-Black won the first leg in Ecuador by 2 to 0, they secured a spot in the Libertadores semifinals. Now, they will face Estudiantes from Argentina, who recently eliminated Corinthians.
