Palmeiras: Abel Ferreira’s Situation and the Critics Who Won’t Stop

It seems that Abel Ferreira’s situation at Palmeiras is generating a lot of debate. Columnist Danilo Lavieri, on Posse de Bola on UOL, gave his take on how the club deals with the manager, and, well, it wasn’t pretty.

Abel Ferreira and the Red Cards: A Complicated Situation

Abel was sent off for the 15th time since he started coaching Palmeiras, and this time it happened in the match against LDU in the Libertadores. That is so problematic that he is already suspended in the Brasileirão and, to make matters worse, he won’t be able to lead the team in the first semifinal match against Fluminense.

Danilo said that, in reality, Palmeiras seems to be “tolerant” of the manager’s behavior, because club president Leila Pereira supports him “regardless of what happens.” He also reflected: “I’ve seen much worse things that didn’t result in a red card, but since Abel went there, left the technical area, and lost control, referee Roldan had no other option but to send him off.”

The President’s Stance and the Criticism from the Fans

The criticism from Danilo and other commentators is that, even when expulsion episodes turn into concrete problems, like this suspension, Leila doesn’t seem to care. He said that the president doesn’t see it as a matter that needs to be discussed. In his view, even if the team were eliminated, she would keep Abel in the job.

“It would be the biggest crisis he would face, even worse than the elimination by CRB. But Leila wouldn’t fire him.” It’s as if she’s completely oblivious to what’s going on.

Recurring Errors and Lack of Self-Assessment

Another commentator, Arnaldo Ribeiro, also weighed in on the situation. He pointed out that, despite Palmeiras still being alive in three competitions, the team’s performance isn’t good. And he said that has a lot to do with mistakes that keep happening, including Abel’s red cards.

“Without a reflection on what’s going wrong, Palmeiras will always fall short of what it can achieve.” And, in Arnaldo’s view, this scenario is complicated.

Fans Opening Their Eyes

Lastly, Arnaldo warned that if Palmeiras had been eliminated by LDU, the fans’ patience with Abel could have “exploded.” And that’s concerning, because you can already see a certain dissatisfaction among supporters.

He made it clear that Abel will not be the coach in the semifinals against Fluminense and that this situation is inexcusable, since he’s losing the chance to improve the team’s performance.
