Libertadores and South American Semifinals Awards: Everything You Need to Know!

Hey, folks! This Wednesday (24), Conmebol released the list of how much the semifinalists of the Libertadores and the South American have earned so far. Let’s take a look at what’s going on in these competitions!

Libertadores: Flamengo at the Top!

First, the numbers for the Libertadores. The Flamengo is leading, having accumulated so far a whopping 9,61 million US dollars (about R$ 49,91 million). And how did they reach that total? The prize payout is based on:

  • Participation in the group stage
  • Number of wins during that stage
  • Qualification for the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals

Who’s in second place? The Palmeiras, with 9,27 million US dollars (R$ 48,15 million). The difference between them comes from wins in the group stage: 5 for Fla versus only 3 for Verdão. Remember that each win in the first stage is worth 340 thousand US dollars (R$ 1,76 million) extra in the bank!

The Other Libertadores Teams

Fluminense and Estudiantes are tied, both with 8,93 million US dollars (R$ 46,38 million), and this money comes from just 2 wins in the group stage. That means the semifinal secured an additional 2,3 million US dollars (R$ 11,95 million) for each of the semifinalists!

And there’s more:

  • Runner-up: takes 7 million US dollars (R$ 36,3 million)
  • Champion: pockets 25 million US dollars (R$ 129,8 million)

The Libertadores semifinals promise a very eventful matchup:

  • Flamengo x Estudiantes
  • Palmeiras x Fluminense

South American: Vasco in the Lead!

Now, moving on to the South American, Vasco leads the table with 3,87 million US dollars (R$ 20,1 million) up to the semifinals. Right after them is Montevideu City Torque, with 3,73 million US dollars (R$ 19,37 million), and Atlético-MG, which finished third with 3,38 million US dollars (R$ 17,55 million).

And who appears at the bottom of the list? Boca Juniors, with “only” 2,6 million US dollars (R$ 13,5 million), having a slightly smaller run, since they reached the South American after finishing 3th in their group in the Libertadores. If we counted the money from the Libertadores, Boca would have more 3,68 million US dollars (R$ 19,11 million) in their account!

Differences in South American Prize Money

The difference in South American prize money comes down to two factors:

  • Prize of 125 thousand US dollars (R$ 649 thousand) for a win in the group stage
  • An extra knockout stage before the round of 16, where there’s a playoff between runners-up from each group and teams from the Libertadores

Since Atlético-MG and City Torque advanced in 1th place, they did not participate in that stage. Vasco and Boca, on the other hand, played the playoff and each one earned an additional 500 thousand US dollars (R$ 2,59 million) in prize money.

With qualification for the semifinals, each of these teams was able to add 800 thousand US dollars (R$ 4,15 million). And the rewards continue:

  • Runner-up: takes at least 2,5 million US dollars (R$ 12,98 million)
  • Champion: pockets 10 million US dollars (R$ 51,94 million)

The South American semifinals are:

  • Vasco x Boca Juniors
  • City Torque x Atlético-MG

Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see who’s going to come out on top in the semifinals and secure a big payday at the end! What’s your prediction?
