Betting Crisis: What’s Going On with Football Clubs?
Football clubs are nervous about the new provisional measure that banned betting houses in Brazil. They can’t understand how the health and financial crisis caused by betting could justify this ban—especially for a sponsorship category that brings million-dollar contracts.
The Clubs’ Outrage
The situation has sparked real outrage! Betting companies have already taken the matter to the Supreme Federal Court to try to overturn this decision. And while they try to figure out what to do, with just a few days until the first round of the elections, some companies are already moving.
New Proposals in the Pipeline!
For example, Fatal Model, a platform that offers companion services, said it has already made proposals to the Flamengo (which declined) and to the Corinthians (which accepted). Those proposals would have been in the range of R$ 120 million per year; far less than the clubs used to receive from betting houses before the ban:
- Flamengo: received R$ 100 million from Betano.
- Corinthians: received about R$ 40 million from Esportes da Sorte.
Life After Betting
These figures aren’t exactly comparable to those from betting, but they’re closer than what the market was willing to accept before this wave of bets. This offer makes one thing clear: there is life after betting! It’s true that Fatal Model is taking advantage of the free publicity generated by the situation, but the proposal seems legitimate.
In addition, other companies from different sectors should keep an eye out to take up more space on the clubs’ jerseys. After all, the end of betting doesn’t mean the end of football!
Reflections on Ethics and Sponsorships
And here comes the most delicate issue. Everyone remembers the uproar caused when Fatal Fans, a content platform from the same group, arrived at the Corinthians. Morality and ethics are being called into question:
- Will the same people who accepted money from companies that harmed millions of Brazilians welcome the money from a companion services website? Will their ethics allow this “absurdity”?
This is a debate that is just beginning. The betting ban measure has brought to the surface issues that go far beyond the money involved in sports. We’ll keep following along!
