A Message to the Government: Cancellation of the Meeting with the Minister of Sport
It seems the temperature in the relationship between Brazilian clubs and the federal government has risen a bit, huh? A good number of clubs decided not to attend the meeting with the Minister of Sports, Paulo Henrique Cordeiro, and this is seen as a real message to the government team.
What Happened?
The meeting was scheduled for this Tuesday (29) in Brasília, but it was canceled the night before, after the clubs chose not to send representatives. According to information the UOL was able to obtain, the decision was made by executives from several teams who, in all honesty, felt that attending this meeting could give the impression that they were supporting an electoral agenda—especially just a few days before the vote.
Reasons for the Cancellation
The Ministry of Sports said the cancellation was due to logistical issues. However, the truth is that there was already low buy-in among the clubs, and the state federations were also kind of “out of the loop” about participating in the conversation.
What Would Be Discussed?
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the strengthening of clubs and of Brazilian football. The meeting was scheduled after the publication of a provisional measure that banned the operation and advertising of betting houses in Brazil. That caused discomfort, and many executives who spoke with UOL said the lack of dialogue before the measure was one of the most recurring complaints.
In addition, people questioned the move that happened so close to the election. The clubs’ lawyers also raised other issues with the government, especially regarding vetoes to the General Sports Law, also from this year. For these executives, the meeting proposal only came after decisions that financially impacted football had already been taken.
And Now?
Canceling the meeting does not mean there was a definitive break between the clubs and the government. In fact, teams like Corinthians, Internacional, and Atlético-MG are in a group that has been negotiating credit lines and discounts on debts. The goal? To minimize the financial impact of the end of betting.
So, what do you think about this situation? Are these moves by the clubs a form of protest or just a strategy? Let’s keep an eye on it!
