Cássio and His Comeback: From Depression at Corinthians to a New Start at Cruzeiro

Let’s talk about something very serious, but also super important: mental health. Recently, Cássio, a goalkeeper known for his time at home with Corinthians, opened up about a very delicate moment in his life before leaving the club and joining Cruzeiro in 2024. In an interview on Charla Podcast, he shared that he faced a "deep depression" and needed to seek professional help.

The Fight Against Depression

In the interview, Cássio revealed: “I was depressed when I left Corinthians”. It’s hard to imagine that a player who made history for 12 years with a single team could be going through a sea of negative thoughts and feeling unable to keep going. But according to him, the situation wasn’t just about losing his starting spot.

Cássio sought therapy, received guidance from a psychiatrist, and took medication during his treatment. He also shared dark moments when he thought about drastic actions, like driving the car somewhere. “At that moment, I couldn’t see a way out,” he reported.

What We Learned from This

The goalkeeper was very clear: it’s not that you don’t want to, it’s that you simply don’t have the strength to get out of that situation. “Money is important, but there are times when it doesn’t matter,” he said on Charla Podcast. That statement really resonates, doesn’t it?

The Club Change and the New Beginning

In May of 2024, Cássio said goodbye to Corinthians and quickly signed with Cruzeiro. He faced criticism that his departure was because he didn’t accept a backup role to Carlos Miguel. But Cássio was firm in stating that this wasn’t his only motivation; he was already fighting emotional issues before that decision.

Even with a two-year contract renewal on the table, Cássio felt he needed to move forward: “I needed to leave.” He mentioned that he was being too hard on himself and believed he wouldn’t be able to contribute the way he wanted — even with Corinthians’ support.

The Future at Cruzeiro

After joining Cruzeiro, Cássio was one of the first signings of the new management and quickly took on the starting role. Today, he is a backup to the young Otávio, only 20 years old, who earned playing time after a knee injury to the veteran.

For Cássio, this change was the "best thing" for both sides. With a contract through mid-2027 and at peace with his new position, he shows that even in difficult moments, it’s possible to reinvent yourself and move forward.

So, Cássio’s story reminds us of the importance of taking care of our mental health and that we’re not alone in our struggles. If you or someone you know is going through something similar, don’t hesitate to seek help. Life is made of ups and downs, and overcoming is what makes us stronger.
