Changes in Bets: What You Need to Know About Club Jerseys
Recently, a technical note from the government brought relief to football clubs and retailers regarding jerseys that already have bookmakers’ house branding. The good news is that they can continue selling these items, even with the betting ban in effect.
Understand the Situation
This government decision came after a question from the Association for the Sports Industry and Commerce (Ápice) about what to do with existing inventories. One of the clubs that raised concerns was Flamengo, given the Provisional Measure signed by Lula that bans betting.
The question that remains is: will fans still want these jerseys, knowing they are “outdated”? The government, in turn, says that what matters is how the products will be marketed.
What Is Allowed?
According to the government, the sale of jerseys that were already produced before the new rule—containing the betting logos—will not be considered a new act of advertising or marketing. In other words, it is allowed to sell the jerseys already in stock at manufacturers, distributors, and stores.
On the other hand, pay attention!
The technical note also made it clear that there are some prohibitions:
- Production of new jerseys or advertising campaigns
- Use of influencers or promotional activations
- Any form of exposure related to sponsorship contracts
That means you can’t think that simply selling the jerseys is the same as renewing a sponsorship contract or running a new promotional action.
What Cannot Be Done?
Still regarding points that do not fall under the permission, the government said that nothing involving:
- Use of uniforms in games or training
- Display in stadiums
- Posts on social media
Any such exposure is still prohibited under the new law. That’s why many clubs are already adapting and “cleaning” their jerseys, avoiding any references to betting.
Examples of the Change
Clubs like São Paulo and Fluminense decided to continue their contracts with the group that operates Superbet. However, instead of the famous logo, they will now display a new product: Superscore, an app focused on bringing data and statistics from football matches in real time.
Final Considerations
The change has brought a mix of challenges and solutions for clubs. Adaptation will be crucial if they are to keep attracting fans—now without the betting brands. Stay tuned for the latest updates and how clubs will reinvent themselves in this new scenario!
