What’s going on in the Brasileirão: Betting on the games!

The MP that rocked the betting world

In the 29th round of the Brasileirão, taking place this Wednesday (7) and Thursday (8), the pitch-side boards will feature highly targeted messages against Provisional Measure 1.394/2026. This MP, which was signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, bans the exploration, offering, intermediation, and advertising of fixed-odds betting in Brazil. This change truly began to take effect on Tuesday (6), when authorized betting platforms had to shut down operations here. And, of course, this is directly affecting football clubs that have contracts with companies in the sector.

The manifesto “Prohibiting isn’t protecting”

The messages that will be displayed on the field are part of the manifesto called “Prohibiting isn’t protecting”, organized by the Associação Nacional de Jogos e Loterias (ANJL) and the Instituto Brasileiro de Jogo Responsável (IBJR). And the lines are extremely impactful! Check out a few of them:

  • “You don’t change the rules mid-game”
  • “Prohibiting those who follow the rules helps who?”
  • “It’s not only football that loses”
  • “Who profits from illegal bets?”
  • “Demand doesn’t end—it just changes addresses”
  • “Who benefits from the illegal market?”
  • “Learn more about betting regulation”

All of these messages will be accompanied by the very clear slogan: “Prohibiting isn’t protecting”.

Clubs on the field: Different approaches

Clubs, in turn, have adopted very different stances toward the MP. While some are keeping their contracts on hold and waiting for a decision from the Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF), others have already ended agreements or are looking for temporary alternatives to replace betting brands.

For example, São Paulo and Fluminense decided to use the brand Superscore, linked to the same group as Superbet, in place of the main sponsorship.

And, as highlighted by UOL, this protest action already took place last Friday (2) during the São Paulo vs. Santos derby, with messages against the MP displayed on the boards at Morumbi.

Let’s see how this situation unfolds in the world of football and betting!
